John Reeves was appointed to the Federal Court in November 2007.
On 3 March 1975 his Honour was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland after completing 5 years articles of clerkship and the Queensland Solicitors Admission Board course. He practised for 8 years as a solicitor in Alice Springs and as a barrister at the Northern Territory Bar in Darwin for almost 23 years. He was appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel in October 1997.
His Honour was President of the Northern Territory Bar Association [2000-2005], the Vice President of the Australian Bar Association [2003-2004] and Deputy Chairman of the Northern Territory Legal Practitioner’s Complaints Committee [1998-2007].
His Honour’s community service includes being a member of the Australian Heritage Commission [1985-1987], Chairman of the Australian Red Cross Northern Territory Division and member of the National Board of Australian Red Cross [2003-2007].
His Honour was elected the member for the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives in 1983. From 1997 to 1998 his Honour conducted a review of the AboriginalLand Rights (Northern Territory) Act for the Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. At the time of his appointment in 2007 he was a member of the Prime Minister’s Northern Territory Emergency Response Task Force.
