The Hon Alan ROBERTSON

Alan Robertson was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia effective from 18 April 2011.

He is a graduate of the Australian National University, with the degrees of BA (Hons) (1972) and LLB (Hons) (1980).

He worked in the Commonwealth Public Service in Canberra between 1973 and 1983, latterly in the Attorney-General's Department.

Justice Robertson moved to the private bar in Sydney in 1983, reading with WMC Gummow. He was appointed Senior Counsel for New South Wales in 1995. At the Bar Justice Robertson practised mainly in public law including constitutional law, administrative law and revenue law.

He was a part time member of the Administrative Review Council from 1992 to 1997. Justice Robertson was the convenor of the Administrative Law Section of the NSW Bar Association from 1995 to 2008 and convenor of the Constitutional and Administrative Law Section from 2008 to 2011.

From 1988 to 2006 Justice Robertson was a member of the Administrative Law Committee, Law Council of Australia. From 1987 to 2009 he was the Consultant Editor of the CCH High Court and Federal Court Practice and, from 1997 to 2009 he was consultant editor of CCH's Administrative Appeals Tribunal Handbook.
