Public Statement of the Chief Justice

30 August 2021

I thank the Presidents of the Australian Judicial Officers’ Association and the Australian Bar Association for their important statements of 19 and 22 August 2021 concerning the independence and impartiality of the judiciary in support of the Court and its Judges.

A Judge of the Court had been the particular subject of criticism, including of bias.  Such criticism was and is unfounded.

All judges take a judicial oath to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill will.

All judges understand the deep importance of that oath.  The oath creates the gulf between other spheres of life and beliefs, and the work of a judge, and it is the foundation of the independence of the judiciary.

The Hon James Allsop AO
Chief Justice
